A 62-YEAR-old man pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court in Georgetown today to seriously injuring his 80-year-old neighbour with an iron rod last Sunday.
Ooi Hock Wah made the plea after the charge was read to him before Judge Irwan Suainbon.
He was accused of deliberately causing grievous hurt to the victim with the iron rod at about 9.30 am on Aug 23, in front of a house in Jalan Perak in Penang.
The charge under Section 326 of the Penal Code carries up to 20 years in prison, and a fine or whipping upon conviction.
The proceedings were briefly interrupted when Ooi suddenly suffered a seizure and was assisted by a police officer.
He later told the court that he had been suffering from seizures since he was young.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Lee Jung Keong said the prosecution was not offering bail, citing the victim’s condition, which remained unstable and required continued treatment.
The victim is being treated for fractures to both legs and an arm sustained in the incident.
Lee said the prosecution needed more time to obtain the victim’s medical report and prepare the facts of the case before sentencing.
The court then denied bail and fixed Oct 1 for mention of the facts of the case before sentencing.
Ooi was previously reported to have assaulted his elderly neighbour with an iron rod in the Jalan Perak incident on Aug 23. – August 27, 2026
