BERSATU remains a legally recognised component of Perikatan Nasional (PN), despite PAS ending its political ties with the party, PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said.
Takiyuddin said Bersatu's status as a component party could not be denied under the coalition's legal and constitutional framework, although the party had, politically, distanced itself from PN.
"As the secretary-general, I can confirm that from a legal standpoint, Bersatu is still a component party of PN.
"We cannot deny this from a constitutional standpoint. But morally and politically, that is why I use the word 'technically' — Bersatu has severed its ties with PN," he said when met in Kota Bharu today.
Takiyuddin, who is also PAS secretary-general, said two separate relationships — that between PAS and Bersatu, and Bersatu's formal position within PN — had to be distinguished.
He said Bersatu's decision to use its own logo and field candidates under its own banner in the recent Negeri Sembilan state election demonstrated that the party had moved away from PN politically.
"For us, technically, they have left. Secondly, they contested using the Bersatu logo, not the PN logo.
"So, there is no longer any political understanding between PAS and Bersatu. It has ended," he said.
However, Takiyuddin stressed that PAS had deliberately chosen the wording "stopping" its political relationship with Bersatu rather than declaring that the relationship had been formally terminated.
"We use the words, 'we are stopping the relationship'. We are stopping political ties with Bersatu."
PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said last Friday that the rift with Bersatu had widened, with the door to reconciliation between the two parties now closed.
He said the position followed Bersatu's decision to contest against PN in the Negeri Sembilan state election on Aug 1.
