JELUTONG Member of Parliament RSN Rayer has called on the police to not only investigate PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang over his remarks alleging that the United States (US) offered the party aid to topple a duly elected Malaysian Government in 2014 but also two other senior party leaders.
As Hadi named PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan and his former political secretary Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar as those who attended the discussion with the US Embassy officials, Rayer said that Bukit Aman should record the duo's statements.
"Bukit Aman must investigate Takiyuddin and Samsuri as well, and not merely focus on Abdul Hadi over the explosive allegation that the US had approached PAS in 2014 with an offer to assist in bringing down the Malaysian Government."
This is not a trivial matter but a serious threat to parliamentary democracy and the inherited system of constitutional monarchy if it's true, said Rayer.
Abdul Hadi had publicly alleged that PAS leaders, including Takiyuddin and Samsuri, attended a meeting at the US Embassy during the then US President Barack Hussein Obama’s visit to Malaysia in 2014, where the US side allegedly offered assistance to topple and take over the Government, said Rayer.
More importantly, Takiyuddin himself has since confirmed that the meeting with US Embassy representatives took place.
Takiyuddin had reportedly said that the representatives asked whether PAS was planning to topple the then Barisan Nasional (BN) Government, although he maintains that PAS rejected foreign interference.
"Why did he not report this to the police or the Yang di-Pertuan Agong? That admission alone makes it imperative for the police to establish the full facts," said Rayer in a statement.
He said there are questions that cannot simply be answered by political statements after the event.
Section 124C of the Penal Code provides that a person who attempts to commit an activity detrimental to parliamentary democracy, or does any act preparatory thereto, may be punished with imprisonment of up to 15 years.
Until today, several police reports have been lodged, and Bukit Aman has confirmed that Abdul Hadi would be called in to assist investigations.
"Whether the facts ultimately disclose an offence under Section 124C or any other provision of law is, of course, a matter for the police and the Attorney General to determine after a proper investigation. But that is precisely why Takiyuddin and Samsuri must be investigated and their statements recorded."
Takiyuddin is a seasoned lawyer and a senior political leader.
If he genuinely knew that a foreign power had approached Malaysian opposition politicians with an alleged proposal to overthrow the Government, the public is entitled to know whether he reported the matter to the authorities or the King and, if not, why he did not do so, said Rayer.
If he says that the discussions did take place, then why did he not report the matter to the police or the King?
