POLICE fired a shot at the tyres of a Perodua Myvi after a couple allegedly tried to flee during a crime-prevention patrol in Kulai, Johor, ramming a police motorcycle and attempting to hit an officer.
The incident occurred at about 1.20am yesterday on Jalan Kenari, Bandar Putra, when members of the Kulai district police headquarters’ Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) spotted the black Myvi in suspicious circumstances.
Kulai district police chief Assistant Commissioner Tan Seng Lee said the vehicle was occupied by a 23-year-old local man and woman.
“During the inspection, the suspects became aggressive and tried to flee by ramming the URB motorcycle and a Mazda CX-5. The suspects also tried to hit a police officer at the scene.
“To defend themselves, the police officer on duty was forced to fire one shot at the tyre of the Perodua Myvi. However, the suspects managed to speed away from the scene,” he said.
The incident left a URB officer with minor injuries to his leg after he became trapped when his motorcycle was rammed.
Forensic personnel from the Johor Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters who examined the scene found bullet fragments and a spent cartridge casing.
Acting on information, the Kulai CID launched a special operation and arrested the couple separately within 24 hours.
The suspects were arrested in Bandar Putra and Kluang between 11.30am and 8.30pm yesterday. Police also seized a remote control device and the black Perodua Myvi believed to have been used in the incident.
Tan said preliminary urine screening found both suspects tested negative for drugs, while checks showed neither had a previous criminal record.
“The motive for the incident is still under investigation and both suspects were brought to the Johor Bahru Magistrates’ Court today for a remand application,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, Section 332 for voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant, and Section 186 for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their duties. - September 13, 2026
