A TOTAL of 1.16 million borrowers owe the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) RM10.7 billion in outstanding loan repayments as of August 31, said the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir said various initiatives have been, and will continue to be, undertaken to ensure the long-term sustainability of PTPTN’s funding model.

These include strengthening loan management by refining terms and conditions to better target those in need, based on PTPTN's financial capacity.

"Other initiatives involve enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of loan repayment collection through enforcement measures and strategic collaborations with government agencies and corporate entities," he said.

He was replying to a written question from Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias (BN-Jelebu) regarding the current outstanding debt of PTPTN borrowers and efforts to boost loan repayments.

Zambry also said PTPTN welcomes borrowers to negotiate and restructure their loan repayments based on their financial capacity, or defer repayments within the permitted flexibilities. – October 6, 2026
