KUALA LUMPUR – The National Security Council (NSC) has squashed rumours that the movement control order (MCO) is scheduled to be reimposed in several states soon.
The council’s statement follows a document circulating on social media stating that the government had agreed to impose the MCO in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Melaka, Johor and Sabah for two weeks.
The document also stated that Senior Security Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah were supposed to make the announcement after conducting a “brain-washing campaign” for the people to avoid causing panic.
“This is fake news. Stop sharing unverified news. If uncertain (on the veracity), please do not share," the NSC said in a statement on its Telegram channel.
Yesterday, Noor Hisham reported that the government is mulling a stricter and more targeted approach for Covid-19 red zones, after the country recorded its highest daily tally yet at 2,539 cases.
He stressed the need for a targeted “circuit breaker” approach to contain the virus, as well as stricter border controls to protect green zones.
The government must look into bringing down the number of daily cases to around 200, he said, adding that the Health Ministry is working together with the NSC to come up with new strategies for high-risk areas. – The Vibes, January 7, 2021
