POLICE have found no evidence of bullying in the case of a 16-year-old student who allegedly injured a teacher with a sharp weapon at a private school in Kuching on Oct 21.

Sarawak acting police commissioner Deputy Commissioner Saifullizan Ishak said investigations had been completed and the investigation papers were submitted to the Sarawak deputy public prosecutor on Oct 26.

However, further action would depend on the prosecution’s review and a forensic psychiatric report on the suspect, he said.

“The forensic psychiatric report is important in helping determine the suspect’s mental state at the time of the incident, including whether the act was committed consciously or while he was out of control,” he told a press conference at the Sarawak police headquarters today.

The incident occurred at about 7.50am, when the student allegedly brought firecrackers before injuring the 42-year-old female teacher with an axe.

The teacher sustained cuts to her left hand, but the injuries did not involve muscles or bones. She received treatment at a private hospital in Kuching and was later discharged.

Saifullizan said the student was arrested on the day of the incident and remained under hospital care, where he was also undergoing psychiatric and medical assessments.

Police have recorded statements from 38 witnesses, including students, teachers, security guards, medical specialists and the suspect’s parents.

Items seized included an axe, a knife, firecrackers, and computers and electronic devices from the suspect’s home.

“The axe was found to have been purchased by the suspect online, while analysis of the mobile phone and computers is still ongoing to obtain information related to the incident,” he said.

Asked about claims that the suspect may have been influenced by online games or certain content, Saifullizan said the matter remained under investigation and police would not draw conclusions without reliable evidence.

The case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code and Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

Saifullizan said any decision on whether the student would be charged or face further action rested with the prosecution after reviewing the investigation findings and relevant expert reports.

Any decision on whether the suspect could be placed in the care of his family or the relevant authorities would also depend on professional assessments and recommendations.

He urged the public not to speculate or circulate unverified information, noting that the case involved a minor. - October 28, 2026
