ENSURING uninterrupted mobile connectivity for passengers along the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) is a key priority as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) intensifies efforts to improve 4G and 5G coverage ahead of the railway's official operation.
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching today joined a cellular coverage testing exercise along Phase 1 of the ECRL to assess telecommunications readiness along the route linking Kota Bharu to the Gombak Integrated Terminal.
The assessment focuses on the quality and consistency of network services throughout the journey, including inside moving trains, through tunnels and at stations, with particular emphasis on stable voice calls and Internet connectivity.
MCMC said coverage enhancement works were being accelerated along several sections of the railway following joint assessments with telecommunications service providers.
It said Maxis Berhad had been appointed by Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) as the project's Single Preferred Infrastructure Provider and Telecommunications Partner to support connectivity requirements along the ECRL corridor.
MCMC will continue monitoring the improvement works to ensure telecommunications services meet passengers' needs when the railway begins operations.
The initiative is part of the government's efforts to extend reliable digital connectivity to strategic public transport infrastructure, which is expected to facilitate travel and stimulate economic activity between the east and west coasts of Peninsular Malaysia.
Members of the public are also encouraged to download the MCMC NEXUS application free of charge through Google Play Store, Apple App Store and Huawei AppGallery to test Internet speeds and contribute real-world network performance data from their respective locations. - November 5, 2026
