THE Election Commission (EC) is expected to announce today the key dates for Sarawak's 13th state election, setting the stage for a month-long electoral process following the dissolution of the state legislative assembly on Oct 26.
The EC is scheduled to hold a special meeting before announcing the election timetable at 10am, including the nomination and polling dates.
Political observers and analysts in Sarawak have identified Dec 19 as a possible polling date, five years and a day after the previous state election on Dec 18, 2021.
Nomination day is expected to fall on Dec 5, while early voting could take place on Dec 15, although these dates remain unofficial pending the EC's announcement.
The proposed timetable would provide a 14-day campaigning period, similar to the Melaka state election, while taking into account the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations, which are scheduled to conclude on Dec 17.
Observers said the period between the expected announcement and nomination day would give political parties, candidates and election workers sufficient time to finalise their preparations.
They noted that the proposed preparation period would be longer than the 16 days available before nomination and 12-day campaigning period during the 2021 Sarawak election.
The EC had previously described the 2021 Sarawak election, held about a month after the Melaka state election, as among the best-organised elections it had conducted.
The Sarawak Legislative Assembly was officially dissolved on Oct 26 to pave the way for the 13th state election.
The dissolution was announced by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg after obtaining the consent of Sarawak Governor Tun Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar. - November 6, 2026
