KUALA LUMPUR – Gua Musang MP Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has tested positive for Covid-19 and is currently being treated at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.

He is said to be a close contact of Nenggiri assemblyman Ab Aziz Yusoff, who tested positive for the virus recently.

Ab Aziz Yusoff and Gua Musang Umno Youth head Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani tested positive for Covid-19 last Saturday.

Tengku Razaleigh is said to have contracted Covid-19 after hosting a group of Gua Musang residents last week with Ab Aziz at his palatial residence in Ampang here.

Aged 83, he is in stable condition and asymptomatic.

It was a super spreader event as those who came into close contact with the group tested positive shortly after the meeting.

Among those who also tested positive is Tengku Razaleigh’s long-time aide Mohd Lukhman Abdul Ghani, his driver and two staffers who had been in the meeting room.

Despite temperature screening and encouraging hand sanitisation, a delegate had the virus but was asymptomatic, said an aide of Tengku Razaleigh's.

Galas assemblyman Mohd Syahbuddin Hashim had also tested positive on January 10.

The aide said the residents had gone on to infect an Orang Asli settlement in the district.

Gua Musang is the largest district in Kelantan and is known for its logging concessions and rubber plantations, as well as one of the largest populations of Orang Asli in the country.

Before testing positive, Tengku Razaleigh presided over a Gua Musang Umno division meeting, where delegates passed a resolution seeking for a general election to be held in the first quarter of this year, in view of current political uncertainties in the country.

If the election cannot be held, Tengku Razaleigh suggested that Umno MPs withdraw from the present Perikatan Nasional government.

He also suggested that Umno and PAS foster closer ties ahead of the election. – The Vibes, January 14, 2021
