MIRI – Hillslope erosion caused by monsoon rains is adding to flood-hit Sarawak’s woes.
On the Bau-Lundu highway, parts of a hill and road have eroded and collapsed, toppling electricity poles.
Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB), in a statement today, said supply to about 9,000 houses and premises is disrupted as a result.
“SEB has carried out remedial measures at the affected sites. We were restoring one of the toppled lines this morning. The hillslope eroded due to heavy rain.”
Technicians are also making sure that the toppled power lines do not pose a danger to the public.
“Repair works are difficult due to the rain and flash floods in the area. The slopes are also unstable after the erosion,” said SEB.
As of noon today, 3,780 people from 1,011 families in Kuching, Serian, Samarahan and Miri are housed at temporary flood relief centres in community and school halls.
They were evacuated from their homes two days ago. – The Vibes, January 16, 2021
