GEORGE TOWN – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is preparing to take in students in stages based on its well-placed action plan.
This is in line with the latest guidelines issued by the Higher Education Ministry (MoHE) to allow local students of higher education institutions to return to their campuses in phases as early as March 1.
USM deputy vice-chancellor for Academic and International Affairs, Professor Datuk Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah in a statement said that they were cautious due to the pandemic situation.
“USM has always been sensitive and takes into account several key factors in preparing its action plan.
“It covers several matters including the safety of all campus residents, critical needs in implementing the teaching and learning process as well as ensuring the quality of process is well maintained,” he said.
He said USM also takes into account the wishes and the views of all stakeholders in the operations.
“The latest announcement from MoHE is seen as a proactive step towards creating an understanding among higher education institutions in the country.
“It is indeed appropriate to take into account the current state of Covid-19.
“Certainly, this is a new normal in the university world and everyone needs to respond to this challenge positively,” he said.
MoHE in its statement on January 31, identified six categories of students who need to return to campus physically starting March 1.
They include certificate, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate students in need of practical, laboratory, clinical, charity training, studios, workshops, and special equipment.
Students who do not have an access and with an environment not conducive to implement online education, existing Basic or Equivalent and Diploma students on campus are to continue hybrid learning.
USM accepts all students, who are qualified and new international students except from the United Kingdom – The Vibes, February 3, 2021.
