GEORGE TOWN – Gerakan joining Perikatan Nasional is seen as a prime opportunity for the party to wrest Penang from DAP.

State Gerakan chairman Oh Tong Keong told The Vibes that the decision to join the coalition is part of a new strategy.

“The announcement is good news for us, a special gift in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.

“As a new component, of course, we will give our full support to the leadership of Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“However, we have yet to hold joint discussions at the state level.

“Perhaps, after the CNY holiday.”

Yesterday, Gerakan president Datuk Dominic Lau received a letter of acceptance on the party’s bid to join PN from pact chairman Muhyiddin at the latter’s office in Putrajaya.

Lau said the party remains focused on wresting Penang, which it led from 1969 to 2008.

Oh, who is also party deputy president, said he is confident Penangites will make the right choice.

“Thirteen years is enough, the people are now wiser in judging.

“With what Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow is doing now – buying luxury cars and renovating the exco offices – I think the people can judge for themselves.”

On Gerakan’s cooperation with PAS under the PN banner, Oh said it is not an issue as PAS does not prioritise a single race, adding that it also has a supporters’ group comprising people of various ethnicities and religions.

“We are open to working with anyone.

“In fact, the PAS principle currently looks more open than before, and I do not see it being an issue for Gerakan.” – The Vibes, February 12, 2021
