MIRI – The Miri City Council has ordered the immediate closure of the popular Taman Seroja food centre after finding that a patron had contracted Covid-19.
“Immediate sanitisation and cleansing of the centre is being carried out now by our public health teams.
“The state Disaster Management Committee has made known that Taman Seroja was exposed to the coronavirus when a person with Covid-19 visited the centre,” said the council in a public notice.
The Taman Seroja food center, located at a junction along Jalan Setia Raja and Jalan Brooke is one of the older food centers in town, and is popular among the city’s office workers and the public more generally.
The council has also ordered three other wet markets to close down until further notice.
They are the Centrepoint Market located in the city centre, the Lutong Market and Taman Marigold Market.
The council said the closure was also due to the pandemic which had affected other wet markets in Miri.
Last Friday, two of Miri’s largest tamu – the local name for a market selling local products and patronised by thousands daily – were ordered to close after they were found exposed to the Covid-19 virus.
Tamu Muhibbah, in central Miri city and Tamu Malam Saberkas located nearby the Pujut housing estate is closed until tomorrow for sanitisation works.
Miri is a Covid-19 red zone.
