MIRI – The defection of two Sarawak PKR MPs has highlighted the need for the party to return to its original agenda of fighting corruption.

Sarawak PKR Women’s head Agnes Padan today said that the departure of Julau MP Larry Sng and Tebrau MP Steven Choong over the weekend shows that corruption is still prevalent and must be wiped out.

“We must focus once again on ending political tyranny and corruption. The episode we went through on Saturday and Sunday is a reminder to all of us.

“Our party grassroots in the state should unite and return to our original struggle of bringing down corrupt politicians and governments.

“We must champion for reformation once again,” she said on her social media.

She added that political tyranny must be defeated via the ballot box in the coming Sarawak state and general elections.

Baram PKR division chief Roland Engan said Sarawak PKR must remain focused on bringing change in the state via polls.

“Our grassroot members are still united and loyal. They will still remain with us. (Their) support is our strength and we still have many loyal people in our party.”

Yesterday, Sng and Choong were sacked by PKR after the two pledged their support to the Perikatan Nasional government.

Sng joined PKR about two years ago and was appointed state PKR chairman last year following the departure of then chairman Baru Bian, after the latter’s falling out with party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Baru Bian was on the side of former deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali during the leadership tussle.

Baru Bian, who is Selangau MP and Ba Kelalan state assemblyman, is now with Parti Sarawak Bersatu, the main opposition party in Sarawak. – The Vibes, March 1, 2021
