GEORGE TOWN – Police here seized 623kg of syabu worth RM22.4 million – the largest in five years – during a night patrol at 2am in Bukit Mertajam on February 25.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigations Department director Datuk Razarudin Husain said police have so far arrested five Indonesians who have been active in Malaysia since last May.

He added that the drugs were supposed to be sent to Aceh, Indonesia by sea.

“Two policemen on motorcycles during their rounds stopped a lorry at the Juru Sentral condominium on the mainland for checks.

“When the policemen stopped the lorry, two men escaped into the dark, but another was arrested. Upon checking, the police found 495 bundles of syabu.”

Of the total, Razarudin said, 101 drug bundles were kept hidden in a compartment underneath the lorry.

“Police later arrested three more locals in Kulai and Seri Alam in Johor. On March 26, another local man was arrested in Sg Buloh in Selangor for investigations.

“We are working with the Indonesian police to establish the syndicate’s network and its operations.”

Police have obtained a seven-day remand order to detain the suspects to facilitate investigations.

Razaruddin said the police also managed to seize the passports of two suspects who escaped from the scene and efforts to arrest them are ongoing.

Meanwhile, on the “drug lords” holding “Tan Sri” and “Datuk” titles, he said police have in their custody the two “Datuks” – one in Kelantan and another in Batu Gajah, Perak. – The Vibes, March 1, 2021
