KUALA LUMPUR – Dissatisfied with a labour court judgement that will force it to pay a hospital cleaner from Hospital Sri Manjung RM1,211, UEMS Edgenta Sdn Bhd is appealing the decision at the high court.
Initially, cleaner Tharani Kutty had sued UEMS Edgenta over unpaid overtime wages.
It was previously reported that hospital workers were initially required to work seven-hour shifts, with an hour’s break.
When UEMS Edgenta took over, the company changed the policy, implementing eight-hour shifts with breaks limited to one hour, but without payment for the extra hour.
At the labour court, Tharani won, and UEMS Edgenta was ordered to pay RM1,211 in unpaid wages for the period from February to August last year.
But unpaid wages were not the only issues faced by Tharani from her employers.
Tharani, who is also transgender, claims she was also told by her superiors to remove her clothing, undergarments and jewellery, and compelled to wear men’s clothing.
Now, with the appeal filed by UEMS Edgenta, Tharani risks losing her hard-won RM1,211.
The appeal is scheduled for e-review on March 8 at the Ipoh High Court. – The Vibes, March 2, 2021
