BAYAN LEPAS – A 2-year-old girl was found to have drowned in a basin of water at her caretaker’s house in Batu Maung yesterday.
Southwest district police chief Superintendent A.A. Anbalagan said that the victim was being bathed by her caretaker in a basin full of water about 11am yesterday.
“However, the nanny left the baby alone in the basin in the bathroom to go pick up a towel,” he said.
“When she returned to the bathroom, the nanny found the victim’s head submerged in the water. She immediately removed the victim – who was apparently still conscious at that time – from the basin.”
Anbalagan said the caretaker then continued to dress the toddler with pampers and put her to bed.
About 30 minutes later, the nanny found that the victim – the youngest of two children – was unconscious.
“The victim was sent to Penang Hospital at 1pm in critical condition, and was pronounced dead at 2am this morning,” the policeman said.
Anbalagan said initial investigations revealed that the 43-year-old nanny was a school friend of the victim’s mother, and that she had been taking care of the victim since the child was two months old.
He added that the suspect was arrested at noon today and is being remanded under Section 31 (1) (a) of the Children Act 2001 to assist in police investigations. – The Vibes, March 3, 2021
