ALOR GAJAH – Water supply at three dams in Melaka is expected to last until September, meaning that the state will avoid a repeat of last year’s water rationing despite the hot spell that has hit the state over the past few months.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali said based on data obtained today, the Durian Tunggal Dam in Alor Gajah recorded a water capacity of 22,013 million litres of water, or 70.6%.

Meanwhile, he said Jus Dam in Jasin recorded a total water capacity of 36,365 million litres (84.1%) while Asahan Dam, also in Jasin, recorded a total water capacity of 695 million litres (99.9%).

“All plans involving water supply in Melaka are being implemented in stages and we are constantly monitoring the levels in the state’s dams.

“Alhamdulillah, since yesterday, Melaka started receiving heavy rainfall after a long, hot period of weather. Only yesterday there was a 1% increase in the water reading,” he told reporters today.

Elaborating further, he said the people of Melaka, however, were advised to continue to practice frugality in their daily water consumption to avoid wastage.

In another development, he said all agencies involved in flood monitoring and management in the state were prepared to face the possibility of flash floods if it rains heavily for a long period.

Sulaiman said there were various plans to prevent flash floods, such as regularly deepening the rivers and ensuring that drainage systems were in good condition.

“All district officers have also been reminded to look at low-lying areas that can potentially be hit by flash floods, and to immediately implement the necessary work to prevent flash floods from happening,” he added. – Bernama, March 7, 2021
