KUALA LUMPUR – Johor’s top cop will sack 12 officers by the end of the week, adding to the eight fired this year and 46 in 2020.
“Yang tak guna ni, kita buang cepat (We will quickly get rid of those who are of no use),” Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay told a press conference today.
“We cannot allow them to remain, as it will affect the force.”
Among their infractions are drug abuse and involvement in criminal activities, including commercial crimes and corruption, he said.
“I am not proud to say the Johor contingent has the highest rate of sacking in the country. Last year, it was 46. This year alone, it will soon be 20. What this shows is that we will not compromise. We will take action.
“This shows that police, especially the Johor contingent, will act against our own. By the end of this year, I believe our statistics (on cops sacked) will overtake last year’s record.”
At the start of the presser, he revealed that his men have arrested one police officer and three personnel for allegedly extorting money from a furniture factory manager.
The suspects approached the victim and allegedly demanded that he pay them RM1,500 or be hauled up for having an undocumented Bangladeshi worker on his payroll, said Ayob Khan.
The manager was allegedly only able to afford RM1,000.
Once the payment was purportedly made, the four cops walked away without pressing charges or arresting the man.
The victim filed a complaint with the Johor police headquarters, and the matter came to Ayob Khan’s attention.
“Apparently, these four policemen had been doing this for quite some time already. They behaved like tax collectors. It’s just that the public never told us.
“I would like to encourage members of the public who face similar situations to come straight to me. Report it straight to me.
We will open an investigation paper and take action. If you have lodged reports with district police or the OCPD (district police chief), and no action is taken, please let me know. I will take action against the errant officers and OCPD.”
He said he will not conduct domestic inquiries into suspicious officers, but will prepare investigation papers, press charges, and allow the courts to decide.
This method is far more efficient in ridding the force of bad apples, he said, and domestic inquiries and internal disciplinary actions may take longer.
The Johor contingent has suspended 59 policemen, including four officers – beating last year’s record of 31 – barely into the second quarter of 2021. – The Vibes, April 14, 2021
