MIRI – Four residential settlements in the state have been placed under the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) following 508 new Covid-19 cases and one death today.
The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee secretariat said the death of the 58-year-old man in Sibu brings the coronavirus death toll to 137 in the state.
Bintulu has the highest number of daily cases today with 118, followed by Sibu (107), Miri (67), Kuching (44), Selangau (33), Kanowit (25), Sarikei (18), Subis (17), Kapit (13) and Sebauh (11). Other districts have fewer than 10 each.
The state also logged two new clusters today, namely the Jalan Bintulu-Sibu cluster in Bintulu and Tarat Tani cluster in Serian.
The cluster in Bintulu involves a secondary school and housing resettlement scheme.
“The index case is a 16-year-old student, and 11 infections have been found in the school and settlement,” said the secretariat.
The new cluster in Serian involves a government housing quarters, where 21 people have tested positive with the coronavirus.
The secretariat said the committee has decided to impose EMCO in four densely populated settlements due to a surge in infections.
The Rumah Tang and Rumah Naning longhouses in Sarikei, Rumah Juni longhouse in Pakan, and Taman Mesra Baki in Serian will be on lockdown for the next two weeks, it added. – The Vibes, April 18, 2021
