BUKIT MERTAJAM – Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim will take legal action against a senior lecturer from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) for allegedly slanderous allegations about his charity work.
Sim said at first he refused to entertain the criticism leveled by Kamarul Zaman Yusoff, as a sign of respect for the holy month of Ramadan.
“However, he did not stop making baseless accusations.
“The allegations not only tarnished my name as an MP, but even more dangerous, inflamed racial and religious sentiments in our society,” he said on his Facebook page.
Sim said Kamarul is also not remorseful and challenged him to take legal action.
“Therefore, for the benefit of the Malaysian community and as an example for all to maintain racial harmony in this country, I have instructed my lawyer to take legal action against Kamarul and other parties involved.”
The controversy involving the two individuals started when Kamarul listed Steven’s various charitable works on his Facebook and warned Muslims to be careful before accepting any help from “Christian missionaries”.
The flare up erupted when Sim helped a young man by gifting a RM4,500 motorcycle which became viral on social media.
Sim had expressed sadness and disappointment because his good gesture was turned into a racial and religious issue.
He instead stressed that it was his duty as an elected representative to help the community regardless of race and religion. – The Vibes, April 20, 2021
