GEORGE TOWN – Senior lecturer at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) Kamarul Zaman Yusoff has denied disputing all the acts of assistance rendered by Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim or urging Malay-Muslims not to receive them.
He said he had only reminded the people not to bestow excessive praise on Sim because the giving of his aid appears to have been orchestrated to raise his image as a politician.
He added that he reminded Sim not to sensationalise his act of giving in such a manner, claiming that it touches on the sensitivities of the Muslim community.
He also denied challenging Sim to take legal action against him.
“On the other hand, as an academic, I am educated with the culture of giving specific details that are accompanied by evidence to each of my statements.
“So, when he claims that I slandered and ridiculed him, then he should state where I slandered and ridiculed him, deny it or sue me,” he said on Facebook today.
As a responsible academic, Kamarul said, he is prepared to defend all his statements on Sim in court.
Kamarul also said Sim’s legal action revealed the extent of the existence of Christian evangelism in DAP.
He said as someone who has long studied the existence of Christian evangelism in the local political arena, including various calls to establish “the Kingdom of God”, he sees the move by Sim to sue him as offering a space in which to expose and examine in open court just how far Christian evangelism exists in DAP.
“Come on, just bring it on!” Kamarul said.
“In fact, there are some DAP members who also agree with me in disputing Sim’s actions,” Kamarul said.
Yesterday, The Vibes had quoted Sim as saying that he will take legal action against Kamarul for making “slanderous” allegations about his charity work.
Sim had said that, at first, he refused to entertain the criticism levelled against him by Kamarul as a sign of respect during the holy month of Ramadan, but the lecturer did not stop making accusations, which he described as baseless. – The Vibes, April 22, 2021
