KOTA BARU – Kelantan Speaker Datuk Abdullah Ya’kub today declared the Melor seat vacant following the death of assemblyman Md Yusnan Yusof on April 30.

Abdullah made the declaration after receiving Yusnan’s death certificate, which was verified by the National Registration Department.

He said the state assembly will make an announcement or send an official letter soon to notify the Election Commission of the vacancy, and will leave it to the latter to decide whether to call a by-election.

“According to Article 46(5) of Part I of the Kelantan constitution, when there is a seat vacancy in the state assembly, I have to inform or send an official letter to notify the EC,” he told reporters here today.

“Within 60 days of receiving the notification, the EC needs to fill the vacancy.”

Yusnan died of a heart attack at his home in Melor last Friday.

He held the seat for two terms, winning it in the 13th and 14th general elections. – Bernama, May 3, 2021
