KUALA LUMPUR – It was just a joke, said the father of a toddler given a vape to puff on, a video of which has gone viral.

The 12-second clip, which was uploaded by the mother to her Instagram page, shows the child – who looks no older than 3 years old – given a vape while he watches cartoons on a smartphone. He appears extremely uncomfortable as he takes a drag on the device.

It is believed that the person who handed him the vape is his father, while his mother is seated beside them.

The woman later posted an Instagram story, saying she has the right to do as she wishes, as she is the boy’s mother.

“What I want to post is my wish. If you don’t like it, don’t follow me (on Instagram). My child, my wish. I am the one taking care of him, stupid!”

The video has raised the ire of social media users, who are demanding that the Social Welfare Department step in and act against the couple.

The Vibes has contacted Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun for comment.

Many netizens said the couple’s action is tantamount to child abuse, while some questioned their mental state. An overwhelming number of users expressed sympathy for the boy.

“So saddening. I cried thinking about the kid. Even vaping in front of your child is already considered dangerous,” said @frhnans.

“I am so pissed watching the video. If you are not ready, mentally and physically, don’t have a child, especially if you are going to spoil his health from young,” said @nurazrnnzm_.

Following the public backlash, the boy’s father took to Facebook to apologise, but said he did not force his son to vape, nor did he torture the child.

“It was just a joke. Those who follow my wife would know how my son is. He is very aggressive, and likes to play with things that are not meant for kids.

“If he wants something, he’ll make sure he gets it. Whatever it is, I apologise for my mistake, and I thank everyone who has been very caring.”

In another post, he urged the public not to go after his wife, saying a woman “might not be strong enough to handle the abuse”.

“Please don’t involve her, as I am not home currently to monitor and calm her.” – The Vibes, May 4, 2021
