KUALA LUMPUR – Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is at the Bukit Aman police headquarters to have his statement recorded over a viral list of 121 federal lawmakers supposedly backing him as prime minister.
However, it is uncertain what time he arrived.
Anwar entered the police headquarters through the back entrance, following police instruction, while the press corp had been waiting at the main door.
He will be questioned by the federal police’s Classified Investigation Unit.
The case is being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code (for publishing or circulating statement or rumour with the intent to cause fear or alarm) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (for improper use of network facilities or network service).
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Huzir Mohamed said yesterday that Anwar would be called for questioning at 3pm today to assist in investigations after 113 police reports were lodged over the list of lawmakers.
The list, which went viral earlier this month, had claimed that 121 MPs from both sides of the aisle have pledged their support for Anwar.
It included 21 Umno backbenchers, with Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, among the names mentioned.
The party and several of its leaders have since denied supporting Anwar, saying that they were not approached by the PKR leader.
Anwar was initially scheduled to provide his statement to the police on October 12, just one day before his audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, but was later postponed.
On October 13, after his audience, Anwar had said in a press conference that he had submitted to the Agong the names of 120 MPs who supported him to form a new government.
