KUALA LUMPUR – Regent of Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has urged the state and federal governments to end mining activities in Tasik Chini, following public outrage over the wanton exploitation of the ecological site recently.
Comptroller of the Royal Household for the Sultan of Pahang, Datuk Ahmad Khirrizal Ab Rahman, in a statement today said the prince has also asked for former mining sites in the area to be restored with suitable forest plants.
Tengku Hassanal has also called for the existing Chini forest reserve to be extended from 4,600ha to between 6,000ha and 7,000ha, to ensure the protection of the flora and fauna there, he added.
“His Highness is concerned and has always monitored the efforts carried out by the state government in ensuring the environment in Pahang is protected.
“His Highness has called for all quarters to ensure environmental, social and governance principles to see to it that the natural treasure will continue to exist and be enjoyed by the future generations.”
The statement from the royal household comes after the prince held a surprise visit to the area on June 13.
Tengku Hassanal called for Tasik Chini, which holds a Unesco Biosphere Reserves status, to be given priority in terms of funding and sustainable development by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry.
He also demanded for an increase in restoration and preservation of the lake by the state government, which is being assisted by the federal government.
Joint enforcement activities involving state and federal authorities must be consolidated, implemented and consistent, he added.
He also said all quarters – the government, non-government organisations, private entities and local residents – play a role in protecting Tasik Chini and the Orang Asli community that lives in the area. – The Vibes, June 14, 2021
