GEORGE TOWN – A consumers’ group has called on local councils not to issue permits for Deepavali bazaars, given the resurgence of Covid-19 in the country.
Consumers’ Association of Penang education officer N.V. Subbarow also urged Hindus not to celebrate the Festival of Lights next month on a large scale, saying everyone has a role to play in ending the coronavirus scourge.
“Everyone has this responsibility (to uphold) for the safety of our family members, including the elderly and children.
“Crowded areas become a point of transmission, and we must prevent this.
“Our negligence or refusal to follow the ‘new normal’ will put us in a painful situation. Let’s not gamble the health of our families and friends.
“We have to join hands to fight this enemy. The war has yet to be won.”
Reiterating the importance of avoiding crowds, as stressed by Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Subbarow said: “This is not the time to show the strength of money. Do not spend too much on food.
“There should also not be any firecrackers, out of respect for the families of Covid-19 victims.
“Traders should not raise the price of clothing and other items related to Deepavali, as many people have lost their jobs and are facing financial difficulties.” – The Vibes, October 17, 2020
