KUALA LUMPUR – The odour pollution in Sg Selangor is similar to that which struck Sg Gong recently, said Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man today.
“Investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the pollution, but the odour is very similar to the one detected in Sg Gong last month,” the environment and water minister told reporters here.
He said the authorities have identified three industrial areas where the pollutants may have come from.
The pollution, detected about 2am today, led to the Sg Selangor Phases 1, 2 and 3, and Rantau Panjang treatment plants being forced to halt operations.
“Five million Selangor residents are affected by the water cut caused by the closure of these plants,” said Tuan Ibrahim.
It is understood that the facilities will restart operations in one to two hours, and supply will be restored within 24 hours.
Meanwhile, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari tweeted that a police report has been lodged in relation to the pollution.
He said the situation is expected to be under control by this evening.
“Water supply will resume in stages.”
In a statement, Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd said there has yet to be a steady reading of 0 TON – which must be attained for treatment plants to resume operations – after three rounds of testing as at 2pm.
It said it has activated 91 water tankers, 24 static tanks and 21 public pipes for affected residents. – The Vibes, October 19, 2020
