KUALA LUMPUR – Four Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) activists have been called by the police for questioning over an animated short film depicting police brutality towards a minor detainee.
In a Facebook post by Suaram today, its members including Sevan Doraisamy, Mohammad Alshatri, Kua Kia Soong, and Misi Solidariti’s Sharon Wah were told to be present at Bukit Aman police headquarters for questioning at noon today.
“We will not bend to intimidation,” Suaram’s Facebook post read.
The video titled “Chili Powder and Thinner” depicted the torture and beating of a 16-year-old boy while under police detention was uploaded on FreedomFilmFest’s Youtube page on June 12.
Subsequently, following the release of the video, police raided the Freedom Film Network (FFN) office in Petaling Jaya, and the home of video producer Amin Landak.
On July 2, police had called in Amin and FFN co-founder Anna Har for questioning.
“We see these investigations as a form of intimidation and harassment of human rights defenders, including artists and storytellers.
“We stand in solidarity with Amin Landak and Anna Har and demand the police to cease any intimidation and harassment against the two,” Suaram said in an earlier Facebook post on July 2. – The Vibes, July 6, 2021
