KUALA LUMPUR – The police have not received any police reports so far against Umno leaders believed to have breached the standard operating procedures (SOPs) under Phase 1 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP).
Speaking briefly to The Vibes, both Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani and Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim separately said they were not made aware of the meetings involving Umno MPs.
“Were there police reports lodged against the meetings?
“We can only investigate if there are reports made. Let me check first,” Acryl Sani told The Vibes.
‘Discreet’ meetings
Earlier, the police have been urged to investigate whether or not the series of “discreet” Supreme Council meetings over recent days have breached any of the current Covid-19 SOPs.
Klang MP Charles Santiago stressed that police should be involved to verify if the SOPs are being followed, and to investigate the purpose of the meetings.
“The police will only investigate if there are reports made against the meetings. But this is something they should act on.
“Given that it took place in a public setting, police should investigate the content of the meeting and see if it fulfils NSC’s (National Security Council) SOPs,” he told The Vibes today.
He noted that under Phase 1, MPs and reps are allowed to travel between districts and states to visit their constituencies.
Checks by The Vibes on the NSC website revealed that face-to-face meetings are not allowed in Phase 1 and any discussion only be conducted via video conference.
On Saturday, a discreet meeting was held involving a large number of Umno MPs at a mansion on Jalan Bellamy.
Yesterday, Umno’s top brass met with a party MP in Menara Dato Onn and the meeting was then moved to Wisma Perwira – a property owned by the military.
According to a report by Astro Awani, Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had reportedly held one-on-one meetings with Supreme Council members last week to obtain signatures from them supporting the party’s decision to withdraw support from the Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration as soon as possible.
At the meeting last night, it is understood that Zahid met with 37 Umno MPs to persuade them to leave PN, but to no avail.
However, according to a source privy to the matter, the leaders gathered to urge Zahid to not make a rash decision to leave PN, following the Umno president’s proposal to pull the party out of the PN government this week.
It is understood that the meet ended around 11.30pm with the leaders, including Zahid, vice-president Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, leaving the premises shortly after wrapping up talks, which started at around 9pm. – The Vibes, July 6, 2021
