GEORGE TOWN – Penang has been put on high alert for rough weather in the next 72 hours due to a monsoon-like weather pattern passing through the region.

State Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said Penangites should prepare for heavy rain and strong winds in the coming days.

Sharing a Meteorological Department advisory, he said the rough weather is expected until Tuesday.

“The department is closely monitoring the situation,” he said in a social media post.

The last time flash floods hit the state was on June 29, when parts of the Batu Ferringhi tourism belt were inundated for several hours.

On Friday, unusually strong winds damaged a newly constructed luxurious condominium at the Straits Quay area.

Videos of fixtures, including what seemed to be scaffolding, falling from the high-rise building have gone viral.

Fortunately, no tenants are living there yet.

The last major flood to hit the state was in 2017, when floods and strong winds triggered landslides at Penang Hill. Seven people died.

Flooding is the norm in Penang, on both the island and mainland.

Sahabat Alam Malaysia president Meenakshi Raman called on the state to take notice of the climate change, with projections that three coastal areas here will be submerged within the next 50 years based on rising sea levels. – The Vibes, July 11, 2021
