KEPALA BATAS – The body of a man with slash wounds on the right side of the head was found along with a motorcycle in a canal in Permatang Kerai Kecil here about 8.15am today.
Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the force is not ruling out foul play, and the victim was found to have a criminal record.
Bomba’s bathroom call
BUTTERWORTH – A 4-year-old boy got his right leg stuck in a squat toilet at his home in Taman Kim Sir here this afternoon.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department operations officer Mohd Hirman Mat Rodzi said rescue personnel used special equipment and shampoo to free the victim.
It is understood that the boy’s parents tried for almost an hour to free their son before calling the authorities for assistance.
70 counts of fraud, 230 more to go
GEORGE TOWN – A 44-year-old jobless man today pleaded guilty to 70 counts of fraud linked to a non-existent investment scheme.
Lim Siong Aik, 44, entered his plea at the magistrates’ court. He faces a total of 300 charges.
He was sentenced to three months’ jail for each charge to which he pleaded guilty. Magistrate R. Manomani ordered that the sentences run concurrently.
Prosecuting officer Siti Hajar Jaafar told reporters that Lim, who was unrepresented, will have the remaining 230 charges read out to him on August 24.
Penang targets herd immunity by October
GEORGE TOWN – Penang is expected to attain herd immunity in the next four months, with the state to receive 703,448 Covid-19 vaccine doses in July alone.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said if every vaccination centre (PPV) operates at maximum capacity, herd immunity may be achieved in October.
Three PPVs started operations today – Dewan Serbaguna Sg Bakap, the Perda convention centre in Tasek Gelugor, as well as Intel Technology Sdn Bhd, which is under the Public-Private Partnership Covid-19 Industry Immunisation Programme (Pikas).
Another two PPVs under Pikas – Jabil Circuit Sdn Bhd and Plexus Manufacturing Sdn Bhd – will be opened soon.
Let would-be jab recipients know what they’re signing
GEORGE TOWN – The Penang Bar and Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) said vaccination clauses should be made available ahead of people’s appointments, so that they are aware of what they will sign at PPVs.
CAP vice-president Fathima Idris told The Vibes that the form given to would-be recipients is not an indemnity, but rather, a consent form, to protect the government from liability.
