BUKIT MERTAJAM – The iconic Minor Basilica of St. Anne here is forced to conduct virtual masses for the second year in a row, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and movement control orders.

The virtual masses were part of its annual feast celebrations that ended on August 1.

The 133-year-old church was elevated to the status of “Minor Basilica” on September 5 last year by Pope Francis. It was a centre of mass celebrations involving almost 100,000 Catholic pilgrims from Southeast Asia during pre-Covid-19 time.

Despite the recognition accorded to it by the Vatican and Holy See, its management feels that virtual masses are similar to prayer arrangements during wartime, which served as a challenge for pilgrims to reaffirm their faith.

Monsignor Henry Raju said the ongoing pandemic is a test for the church and its worshippers to return to the foundations of the religion.

“Going back to the history of Catholicism, before the scriptures were written, the faith was spread by word of mouth, despite the initial prosecution by the Romans.

“As such, the faith grew and spread despite such challenges, especially during wartime.

“In the end, it is faith, and not the sacramental and rituals that kept the religion strong and surviving through the ages.”

He said while St. Anne’s Feast falls on July 26, the nine-day Novena period from July 23 to August 1 saw an overwhelming support and response from worshippers.

During the nine-day period, Penang Bishop Datuk Seri Rt Rev Sebastian Francis and 10 others, including nuns, priests and deacons, received phone calls from worshippers seeking to give thanks and prayers.

“Many had prayed for the Covid-19 pandemic to end,” said Raju.

For Catholics worldwide, St. Anne is looked upon as the patron saint of mothers, women in labour and minors, and is held in great esteem.

Those from other faiths, especially childless couples also revere St. Anne as they make petitions to her at the grotto, so she will bless them with a child. – The Vibes, August 5, 2021
