KUALA LUMPUR – The political uncertainty hanging heavy over the country is why Umno and its Barisan Nasional coalition are forced to “correct things” despite the king’s decree for all politicking to cease, said Supreme Council member Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin.
If the situation does not improve, he said, the national economy and investor confidence will be impacted.
He said Umno and BN believe that snap elections are the best way to resolve the crisis, but the Covid-19 threat makes this a poor option.
“Yes, the call by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong must be adhered to, but the situation today is very uncertain,” he told reporters after a meeting of BN MPs at Putra World Trade Centre here this afternoon.
“What is happening today is the result of the decisions made by the rakyat (in the last elections). We politicians are just trying to correct things.
“So, how should we do this? This is exactly why we are sharing our opinions today (at the BN meeting).”
Zahidi said the talks aimed to decide what is best for the people, and urged the public not to blame politicians for the current imbroglio.
Yesterday, the Agong called for a political ceasefire and for all efforts to be focused on combating the pandemic, after rejecting Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s bid to declare an emergency. – The Vibes, October 26, 2020
