KUALA LUMPUR – Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak urged Barisan Nasional to support PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a meeting of the pact’s leaders today, people familiar with the matter told The Vibes.
It is understood that a number of MPs will support Anwar in his ambition to wrest Putrajaya from Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
A source said the meeting almost came to a standstill after the former coalition chief made the proposal, “but what I can confirm is, Najib did raise this earlier”.
It is also believed that tonight’s Umno Supreme Council meeting will discuss the party’s role in Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional, as well as matters raised in the earlier BN discussions.
Sources said Umno’s support is conditioned on DAP not being part of the cabinet, although a compromise could be reached if the latter party gets junior posts or minor ministries.
Earlier, Astro Awani, citing sources, reported that an “MP” raised the matter of supporting Anwar at the BN meeting.
It is understood that the Supreme Council meet will also serve as a bellwether for Sarawak parties to continue supporting Muhyiddin or throw their weight behind someone else.
Muhyiddin’s tenure as prime minister has been the subject of doubt and scrutiny after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong yesterday did not consent to emergency rule.
The king instead urged politicians to stop politicking and focus on battling Covid-19 and reviving the economy. – The Vibes, October 26, 2020
