MIRI – Several settlements in the Baram district are under 2m of floodwater as downpours continue in northern Sarawak.
The latest updates from three sources point to a worsening ground situation.
Baram People Action Committee chairman Philip Jau told The Vibes that residents in longhouses such as Long Loyang, Long Atip, and Long Panai said the floods are reaching the two-metre mark.
“Those living in double-storey longhouses are moving all their belongings to the upper floor while those in single-storey buildings and school hostels have moved to higher ground.”
The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee secretariat said an evacuation centre had been opened this morning in Long Lama town to house flood victims from nearby settlements.
So far, about 60 people have been evacuated there.
Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau told reporters that the relevant agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department, civil defence, Welfare Department, and district office personnel have been deployed to the flooded zones.
