MIRI – Progressive Democratic Party president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has called on the Sarawak government to order all preschools and kindergartens to close with immediate effect.

The situation is too risky to keep the centres open, he said today in his social media chats, as Sarawak recorded more than 3,000 new infections for the fifth consecutive day.

Tiong, who is Bintulu MP, said that many young children are getting infected in his constituency every day.

“The Education Ministry must take note, and the state Disaster Management Committee must react fast, too,” he said.

“Stop all preschools and kindergartens from operating with immediate effect. For the sake of the small kids, we must take cautious steps to protect them.”

Sarawak recorded 3,118 new Covid-19 cases and nine deaths today.

Kuching saw 984 new cases, Sibu (430), Betong (200), Bau (143), Bintulu (140), Sri Aman (132), Samarahan (131), Serian (117), Miri (113), Song (112), and other districts (several dozen each).

Kuching saw the deaths of three women, aged 72, 74 and 82, and a man aged 73.

The other deaths are in Lubok Antu (a man aged 66), Miri (man, 65), Sibu (woman, 62), Saratok (woman, 87) and Simunjan (man, 79).

The total death toll since the pandemic began in Sarawak now stands at 602. – The Vibes, September 9, 2021
