10,915 new Covid-19 cases today, Sarawak at 2,121

KUALA LUMPUR – New Covid-19 cases in the country dropped slightly to 10,915, from 11,889 yesterday.

This brings the cumulative number of cases to 2,268,499.

Sarawak tops the list again with the highest number at 2,121 cases, followed by Selangor (1,386), Kelantan (1,288) and Johor (1,124).

Perak recorded 862 cases, Terengganu (818), Sabah (784), Penang (768), Kedah (574), Pahang (504), Melaka (216), Negeri Sembilan (211) and Kuala Lumpur (171).

Perlis logged 58 cases, followed by Putrajaya (26) and Labuan at four.

In a statement today, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that out of 10,915 new cases today, 139 (1.3%) are in categories 3, 4, and 5, whereas 10,776 cases (98.7%) are from the less severe categories 1 and 2. 

Dr Noor Hisham said the country also recorded 15,396 recoveries, bringing the total discharged to 2,086,111.

He reported that 888 patients are under intensive care, while 484 require breathing assistance.

Meanwhile, he said seven cases were imported.

He also reported that the infectivity rate (R-naught) for the nation is below 1.0 at an R-naught of 0.90.

On top of the list is Perlis with 1.04, Putrajaya (1.03), and Melaka (1.01), while the infectivity rate in other states is below 1.0.

In addition, he said the country has seen a total of 5,501 clusters, including 10 new clusters today.

A total of 4,457 clusters have ended, leaving 1,044 active clusters.

He said four of the new clusters today are from the community, four from workplaces, and two related to high-risk groups. 

Meanwhile, he said that senior citizens were one of the most affected groups when the pandemic hit the country. 

“As of September 30, a total of 177,220 elderly people (7.9%) had been infected. A total of 106 clusters involving this group of people were reported. This involved 3,598 positive Covid-19 cases, including 220 deaths reported in these clusters. 

“Up until September 29, a total of 3,148,438 (87.4%) of them have been fully vaccinated while a total of 3,365,443 (93.4%) of them have received at least one vaccine dose.

“A total of 19,641 (66.8%) residents and caregivers at care centres for elderly have been fully inoculated,” he said. 

He assured that vaccination efforts are ongoing to ensure that individuals in this high-risk group are protected from the coronavirus.

“Phase 2 of the national immunisation programme for seniors and the vulnerable, which began in April, is starting to show its effectiveness.

“Statistics from Sg Buloh Hospital showed a significant decrease in the admission of elderly patients to hospitals for categories 4 and 5 compared to adults aged 20 to 59 years old.” – The Vibes, October 2, 2021
