KUALA LUMPUR – Police are investigating a viral video clip containing disparaging remarks on non-Islamic faiths and race, linked to an independent preacher.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Abdul Jalil Hassan said the one-minute video, which has been spread on social media platforms such as TikTok, Facebook and WhatsApp over the last few days, has incurred public anger.
“An investigation has been carried out by the Classified Crime Investigation Unit, Prosecution and Law Division of Bukit Aman CID under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code for making a statement with intent to incite, or which is likely to incite, any class or community of persons to commit any offence against any other class or community of persons, as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988 for the abuse of network facilities or network services,” he said in a statement last night, as reported by Bernama.
He said the probe is related to an ongoing case, and that the public is advised against speculating on the matter.
Action can be taken against individuals who deliberately threaten public order and security, he said.
‘There are other videos’
Global Human Rights Federation president S. Shashi Kumar in a statement said there are more of such videos featuring preacher Syakir Nasoha making disparaging remarks on other religions.
“I have all the full videos of his speeches, and will lodge another police report and submit the evidence.”
He alleged that Syakir’s “hateful messages, which are full of stupid and easily disproven lies”, were repeated in a Facebook Live session this month just two days before police reports were lodged nationwide.
The preacher is not apologetic in the new clip, instead repeating his controversial remarks, said Shashi Kumar.
“This (new) video content has been removed and the page has been deleted,” he said, adding that the new speech, which is 55 minutes and 40 seconds long, has been obtained as “evidence”.
He said it is time that the “dirty abnegation and degradation” of other religions end.
Article 8 of the federal constitution guarantees equality before the law and equal protection of the law for all persons, he said.
“Thus, ustaz Syakir Nasoha cannot be allowed to have any advantage for his unlawful acts by claiming to be an Islamic preacher.” – The Vibes, October 7, 2021
