BUKIT MERTAJAM – A social activist brought cheer to the underprivileged at the Desa Wawasan low-cost flat units here by giving new clothing and food items to 30 families in time for the Deepavali celebrations tomorrow.
Vimalan Chandrasekaran, 40, not only distributed new sarees for women and dhotis for men, but also provided cooking oil, sugar, curry powder, flour, festive cookies, and fresh chicken in addition to pocket money for physically challenged individuals.
“They were eagerly waiting my arrival, and I am happy as I was able to bring joy to their homes during Deepavali.
“I will continue to do my welfare and charity work as it brings smiles to their faces, despite the burden of life and effects following the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I am happy as they, too, will celebrate Deepavali,” Vimalan, a full-time tutor, told The Vibes after handing over the aid yesterday. He subsequently rushed to Padang Serai in Kedah to distribute the items to three physically challenged individuals there.
Last Saturday, he also presented similar items to 34 extremely poor families at the Punca Erskine flats in Tg Tokong.
Vimalan, who has been operating alone in terms of welfare and charity work for the past 10 years, is now backed by his wife, Vimala Subramaniam.

He also thanked his friend, Ng Kim Chooi, a businessman, who joined him to contribute food items to the underprivileged.
Additionally, he had also previously provided packed meals to poor families and the Rohingya community on the island and mainland during the movement control order. – The Vibes, November 3, 2021
