KUALA LUMPUR – All 28 Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidates in the upcoming Melaka election will be made to sign a pledge to combat corruption in the next few days, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The PN chairman said his coalition will also be launching its manifesto around the same time, which would outline its plans for the state.

“This is to show how committed we are in terms of our fight against corruption,” said Muhyiddin, who is also the Bersatu president.

“We have prepared the pledge that I will ask all our candidates to sign, to mark their commitment. This is to tell the people of Melaka that this is our guarantee (of anti-corruption) should a PN state government be formed after November 20.”

Muhyiddin said this during the “Pentas Melaka PN” (PN Melaka Stage) campaign event held at the Glenmarie Hotel and Golf Course in Shah Alam this evening.

Also present were PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, and Gerakan president Datuk Dominic Lau Hoe Chai.

Muhyiddin said the manifesto will highlight matters that need to be given attention, in order to make Melaka a historic city that is developed and prosperous.

“This is our guarantee, the manifesto and our pledge to be explained in the next one or two days will show the fields and matters that we will implement from the first year, until the fifth and final year of administering Melaka,” Muhyiddin said.

“And we hope in that period, Melaka and its people will be able to enjoy development and progress in all fields, whether in terms of the economy, social, religion, education, and others.”

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin – who is also the National Recovery Council chairman – urged the government to allow more leniency on standard operating procedures (SOPs) during the campaign period to allow candidates to go down to the ground, and meet their constituents and voters.

“With the SOPs, there are restrictions whereby we cannot move about as usual.

“I ask the government to give due consideration to allow space and freedom for our candidates to go down to the ground. If not, it gives the perception that we are arrogant, while voters hope to meet us.”

Muhyiddin also urged the government to provide space for PN candidates to make appearances on mainstream media and introduce themselves to voters. – The Vibes, November 11, 2021
