KUALA LUMPUR – Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Parliament) Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar required the assistance of his parliamentary colleagues to ascertain the meaning of RUU355.
Rang Undang-Undang (RUU) Mahkamah Shariah (Bidang Kuasa Jenayah)(Pindaan) 2021 (RUU355) refers to the Amendments to the Shariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act to enhance the powers of Malaysia’s Islamic judiciary.
Wan Junaidi was asked by Datuk Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub (Machang-BN) on whether the government intends to table the RUU355 bill in Parliament soon.
Wan Junaidi, who seemed unsure what Ahmad Jazlan was referring to, asked: “What is RUU 355?”
After an explanation from the Machang MP that RUU355 refers to legal amendments aimed at enhancing the powers of the shariah courts, Wan Junaidi explained that in law school it is more common to refer to legislation by their name, not other indicators.
“I simply wanted to get the name of the bill.
“In university, we refer to laws by their names, not their numbers,” Wan Junaidi said.
However, Wan Junaidi told the Dewan Rakyat that he would not be able to answer Ahmad Jazlan’s queries, as the most appropriate person to do so would be the religious affairs minister.
“Based on my understanding, the laws regarding Islamic faith require the approval of all states.
“Also, on questions concerning Islam, it must be referred to the relevant minister,” Wan Junaidi said during his Budget 2022 winding-up speech. – The Vibes, November 15, 2021
