MELAKA – Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has promised to introduce an anti-hopping enactment in Melaka after the coalition successfully reclaimed the state in the snap polls today.

In a press conference at the BN command centre this evening, the Umno president said the coalition would work on amendments to legislations to avoid party-hopping among elected assemblymen.

“Our victory today sends a signal that Melaka voters are returning their support to BN. Thank you to all Melaka voters for giving this chance to BN.

“With this victory, BN acknowledges the people’s desire for political stability and we will translate this stability not only in Melaka but also all over Malaysia,” said Zahid, who is also the Bagan Datuk lawmaker.

Earlier, the Election Commission confirmed that BN has secured at least 15 out of 28 seats in the state polls, giving it enough of a majority to form the state administration.

Zahid also said that his coalition would also introduce a procedure for a constructive vote of confidence to the state assembly.

“We will propose to cooperate with all assemblymen to ensure their time as assemblymen can last at least four years from the date of the first sitting.

“We will also introduce a transformation agenda and enforcement to allow all assemblymen to play a more effective role in enacting laws and policies for check-and-balance purposes,” he said in his victory speech.

In addition, he said the BN-led government will propose allocations and benefits to be given to all representatives, which will be decided in a committee chaired by the elected chief minister and speaker.

He also extended his gratitude to coalition leaders who contributed to BN’s victory in the snap polls.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan who led the coalition machinery in Melaka, MCA and MIC leaders, and Melaka Umno chief Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

“Not to forget Bossku’s (Datuk Seri Najib Razak) contributions.” – The Vibes, November 20, 2021
