MIRI – Sarawakians are still contracting serious infections and dying of Covid-19 amid the state election frenzy, warned Miri MP Dr Michael Teo Yu Keng.
Today saw two more confirmed coronavirus deaths in the state – a woman aged 23 in Sarawak General Hospital, Kuching, and a man aged 82 who had died in his Kuching home and was brought in dead to the hospital.
These are the latest fatalities confirmed today by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).
Dr Teo told The Vibes that there are indications of a more serious wave of infections involving Covid-19 variants in Sarawak.
“I know this is the state election and everybody seems to be absorbed in it – so much so, that Covid-19 has been pushed into the shadows.
“The reality is that Covid-19 variants are becoming dangerous.
“In certain countries, there is an increase in deaths arising from swift infections of Covid-19 variants.
“As we in Sarawak are now in the midst of the state election, there seems to be very little focus on swabs or testings anymore – which is, in fact, very dangerous.
“We cannot take our eyes away from Covid-19, or let our guard down.
“Covid-19 variants are still very aggressive in the community, despite SDMC saying the figures are already low,” said Dr Teo.
Today, SDMC said there are only 72 new infections recorded throughout Sarawak, plus the two confirmed deaths.
But Dr Teo believes the actual figures were much higher, warning all Sarawakians to take extra precautions.
