KUALA LUMPUR – A total of 540 areas in three regions in Selangor and the Klang Valley have experienced unscheduled water supply disruptions due to the shutdown of two water treatment plants, while another is only able to operate partially.

In a statement, Air Selangor announced that the increase in river levels has caused two plants to be switched off early today and one more in the evening. The fourth plant is producing treated water, but not at full capacity.

The company said that there has been no water supply at the Langat 2 treatment plant due to an emergency power outage at the Semantan inlet.

Additionally, the Cheras Batu 11 plant was forced to stop operations due to flash floods. As at 7.30pm, operations had not yet started due to water overflow to the pump house.

In addition, the Semenyih 2 treatment plant was shut down in the evening due to the increasing water level that entered its raw water pump house.

Meanwhile, the increase in the water turbidity level at the Sg Langat plant has resulted in only 40% of the usual daily production. The emergency electricity closure at the Semantan inlet was still being implemented as at 7.30pm.

The three regions affected are Petaling, Kuala Lumpur, and Hulu Langat.

“The expected full operations time for all water treatment plants is yet to be confirmed at this time,” Air Selangor said in an update posted at 8pm.

“It is crucial for Air Selangor to ensure that all equipment at the water treatment plants are in good condition and can be operated without endangering the safety of Air Selangor’s onsite staff, especially those involving electricity.”

It added that 63 water tankers have been mobilised in stages to the affected areas, with priority given to critical premises during the unscheduled water supply disruption.

“Air Selangor is seeking the consumers’ cooperation to practise social distancing and wear face masks while collecting the water supply from the water tankers,” it said.

Consumers can look up the list of areas affected on Air Selangor’s website and the Air Selangor app.

The water company will post updates on this situation through its official accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Consumers can also get in touch with the Air Selangor contact centre at 15300, as well as submit enquiries and complaints through the help centre on the website and the Air Selangor app.

Continuous rainfall swept through the central states of Malaysia in the past three days, triggering flash floods and landslides which severely affected areas such as Selangor.

Thousands of victims have been evacuated from their homes into temporary shelters while many more are still stranded, seeking help through social media. – The Vibes, December 19, 2021
