KUALA LUMPUR – The number of flood evacuees seeking shelter at relief centres in Selangor and Pahang continued to increase, with over 61,000 people evacuated to temporary relief centres.
In Selangor, the state Social Welfare Department’s InfoBencana application said that, as of 10am, a total of 32,044 victims have been evacuated to 162 relief centres in all districts in the state.
The state contingent police headquarters said that 73 roads in Selangor were closed due to floods as of 4am.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, in a post on his official Twitter, informed that the Klang district recorded the highest number of evacuees with 18,858 people.
Two roads were under the jurisdiction of KLIA district police headquarters (IPD); nine under Klang Utara IPD; two under Sungai Buloh IPD; 11 under Subang Jaya IPD; 27 under Kuala Langat IPD; five under Sepang IPD; six under Shah Alam IPD; 10 under Klang Selatan IPD; and one under Hulu Selangor IPD.
In Pahang, the state Social Welfare Department’s InfoBencana said that a total of 25,669 people were evacuated to 239 relief centres this morning compared to 19,344 people at 214 relief centres last night.
A later update by the application showed that 9,181 people from 7,738 families were currently seeking shelter at 242 PPS, with the affected districts being Bentong, Raub, Lipis, Jerantut, Temerloh, Bera, Maran, Kuantan and Pekan.
Nine districts have been hit by floods so far, namely Bentong, Raub, Lipis, Jerantut, Temerloh, Bera, Maran, Kuantan and Pekan.
Lebuh Raya Pantai Timur’s Facebook page informed that food was being delivered to victims who were stranded in areas along the East Coast Expressway and the stretch at Km76-Km126 Karak-Temerloh was still closed on both sides.
The state Disaster Management Committee’s secretariat reported that several major rivers in Pahang were still at dangerous levels, including Sg Pahang, Sg Jelai, Sg Tembeling, Sg Lipis, Sg Bentong, Sg Lembing, Sg Lepar and Sg Belat.
Perak and Negri Sembilan also recorded an increase in the number of evacuees, but it did not hit the 1,000th mark.
In Perak, another relief centre was opened at Dewan Bandaran Teluk Intan yesterday, bringing the total number of operational relief centres there to three.
A spokesman for the Perak Disaster Management secretariat said the number of victims increased to 242 people compared to 154 people yesterday due to the overflowing of waters from Sg Bernam, Sg Slim and Sg Trolak.
In Negri Sembilan, state civil defence director Lt-Col Mohd Syukri Madnor said the flood victims in Seremban and Port Dickson had increased to 605 individuals from 145 families with 10 relief centres opened as of 12pm.
Kelantan, Terengganu and Melaka recorded a drop in the number of flood victims.
There was a drop from 3,801 people involving 1,098 families to 3,659 people from 1,079 families this morning.
Kelantan civil defence Disaster Management and Operations officer Zainuddin Hussin said 40 relief centres have been opened so far – 24 in Kuala Krai, five in Gua Musang, eight in Pasir Mas as well as two in Tanah Merah and one in Jeli.
The official eBanjir Kelantan portal reported that four major rivers in the state were at dangerous levels, namely Sg Lebir in Tualang, Kuala Krai, at 36.53m; Sg Kelantan at Tangga Krai at 26.74m; Sg Kelantan at Jambatan Guillemard at 17.12m; and Sg Golok in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas at 10.28m.
In Terengganu, the number of flood victims dropped to 158 people from 38 families, compared to 288 people from 68 families yesterday, involving Kemaman and Dungun districts.
Melaka civil defence director Lt-Col Cuthbert John Martin said the number of flood victims had dropped to 718 people from 158 families compared to 826 people from 183 families this morning. – Bernama, December 20, 2021
