KOTA KINABALU – Two persons went missing around Tatagan Island in Semporna, off the east coast of Sabah, after the pump boat they were on board was struck by an explosion from a fish bomb.

The Fire and Rescue Department said a search and rescue (SAR) operation would be launched today after they received an alert from the local police department.

“Based on the details provided to the department, the incident occurred on January 11 (yesterday),” the department said in a statement.

“The SAR operation involves the police, marine police, Sabah Parks and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency,” said the department’s assistant director Misran Bisara.

Fish bombing is rampant in many coastal Sabah areas, including on the east coast of Sabah.

Just last Monday, five individuals fled from arrest near Gaya Island here over suspected fish bombing activity.
