KUALA LUMPUR – The government should swiftly carry out more substantive action instead of delivering report after report on floods, said Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Rahim (Baling-BN).
He took aim at Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economics) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed (Jeli-Bersatu), saying in the Dewan Rakyat today that the senior minister should play his part in advising the cabinet.
He went on to suggest that if the minister is unable to carry out his duties, he should make way for those capable of shouldering the task.
“If you cannot do it, you have to ask someone else to do it,” he said.
Azeez then added fuel to the fire by pointing out that over the years Mustapa has been a minister, the dire flood issues in his home state of Kelantan have yet to be solved, which does not bode well for other states in the nation.
Channelling spiritual energy into his speech, the Baling MP claimed that the recent floods were a sign from God and that the death toll of 54 citizens could have been far higher.
“The floods in December should have caused the death of more than 3,000 people but God saved the lucky land of Malaysia and only over 50 people died.
“God is giving us a sign. The houses of wealthy people in Selangor were submerged in water, and people who were stranded on rooftops had to urinate and defecate out in the open,” he said.
A special committee, he stressed, should be established under the Prime Minister’s Office, specifically under the Economic Planning Unit which will gather information on the required financial allocations.
“The Finance Ministry must then work together with the Environment and Water Ministry to ensure that proper actions are taken to rectify the situation and prevent future disasters,” he said, adding that such steps will allow for “light in the tunnel”. – The Vibes, January 20, 2022
