NIBONG TEBAL – Pulau Burung Landfill fire extinguishing efforts are in full swing with the fire area now reduced to 31% over the 11ha site, thanks to the firefighting efforts of 36 firemen using 12 water tankers, 25 personnel from the Seberang Prai City Council (SPCC) and Penang Island City Council (PICC), 20 policemen and seven Civil Defence Force personnel.

The fire, which continues to burn in the lower layers of the landfill, is said to be controllable and the team is monitoring the situation using drones from time to time.

The Seberang Prai Disaster Management Committee said in a statement today that it is the eighth day of extinguishing the landfill fire in Pulau Burung.

Besides the 12 water tankers, there are also two from the fire department, seven from SPCC, three from PICC, two fire engines and high-performance module pumps being used in the operation.

The committee said the team continues to fight the fire in Sector 5, with the fire department’s extinguishing efforts employing the use of four fixed-monitor water fountains and five plain-nozzle water sources assisted by landfill operator Syarikat PLB Sdn Bhd and the Civil Defence Force.

It added that in Sector 3, extinguishing is being done using land reclamation and water fountains from four fixed-monitor and five plain-nozzle water equipment. – The Vibes, January 29, 2022
